The double bass as a starting point for new perspectives.
The double bass is her instrument, but not her limit. Tabea Kind moves between composition, performance, band leadership and teaching, slipping effortlessly from one role to the next. Whereas the bass usually tends to stay in the background, this artist looks to the forefront: she is just as interested in its sonic possibilities as she is in what happens when she leaves it behind.
Tabea Kind demonstrates the versatility of an artist who cannot be confined to a single instrument or role. Born in Karlsruhe, she studied in Freiburg and Basel and now lives in Cologne, where she remains closely connected to the German and Swiss music scenes to this day. As a double bassist, she is a member of a wide variety of ensembles, including Ocell, RENNER and Aino Salto. At the same time, she works as a composer, leads her own projects and currently teaches double bass at the Freiburg University of Music.
At the heart of her own work is her trio with Lucas Leidinger on piano and Lucas Zibulski on drums. Following their debut album *Fragments*, which impressed with its sonic depth, emotional expression and spirit of experimentation, their second album, *Dialogue Poetry*, is due for release in November 2026. For this album, Kind not only composes all the pieces, but also presents her music from two distinct perspectives: in the first half, Tabea Kind presents intimate solo recordings on the piano, some featuring her own voice. These are the versions that took shape in the evenings in her Cologne flat. Only afterwards do they become audible in a trio context – the personal sketch transforms into a collective sound.
Through this shift in perspective, Kind reveals her working method and demonstrates just how much can lie between the initial musical idea and the finished ensemble sound. “Looking to the future, I want my projects to reflect both the beauty of the double bass and a broader understanding of music: interdisciplinary in approach and reflective in nature,” says the artist of her vision.
